KY Highway Safety Director to Share Story of Restoration

Dr. Noelle Hunter, recently- appointed Executive Director of the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, will share her story of recovery and redemption at the 9th Annual Christmas in September Fashion Event & Dinner.  Sponsored by Stock Yards Bank & Trust, the event will be held Thursday, September 8, 2016, at the Seelbach Hilton Louisville, beginning at 5:30 pm.

Dr. Noelle Hunter In her new position, Dr. Hunter is responsible for improving traffic safety on Kentucky’s roadways. Prior to joining the KYTC, Hunter was the Director of College Readiness at Morehead State University. During her decade in higher education, Hunter also served as a professor at West Virginia University and West Virginia Wesleyan University.

Her journey to the state office was nearly derailed by a 2007 charge involving cocaine use. But she participated in a drug treatment program and the charge was later expunged.

“I’m an example of how a community can believe in someone and how that belief can restore a person,” Dr. Hunter has said.

“Dr. Hunter struggled with and overcame the same addiction that many of our clients deal with,” said Tony Ford, Chairman of the Board for Prodigal Ministries. Proceeds from Christmas in September go to the Louisville agency that serves men and women inmates upon their release, helping them to avoid prison return.

“Prodigal Ministries gives hope to newly-released men & women, providing critical support such as housing, job training, and counseling that significantly increase their chances of not returning to prison,” said Jennifer Partin, Executive Director of Prodigal Ministries.

“The first 90 days are crucial. With no housing, no job prospects and no income source, many of these men & women are simply overwhelmed and fall back into old patterns that result in a return to prison. Of those that return to prison, a majority – nearly 85% – will reoffend within 30 days of release,” explained Partin.

The support services the organization provides have helped Prodigal Ministries to achieve a significantly reduced return-to-prison rate for its clients, compared to state and national rates.

Christmas in September will be held Thursday, September 8, at the Seelbach Hilton Louisville. Holiday attire is suggested. Tickets are $175 each, with tables of 10 at $1,750. For tickets, contact reservations@ProdigalKy.org or 502-386-1473.

$15,000 Women 4 Women Grant Funds Counseling

Thanks to a generous $15,000 grant from Women 4 Women, Prodigal Ministries is able to provide counseling services for our women residents at the McCauley House.

At Prodigal, we help our clients work through complex emotional issues that often lead to a return to prison if not addressed. Most of our clients have been physically and sexually abused, abandoned, and involved in substance abuse. The majority were raised by single mothers, lived in foster care or detention centers. Prison has added another layer of dysfunction to their lives, resulting in emotionally scarred adults.

Women 4 Women and its donors improve the lives of women and girls in Metro Louisville through education, advocacy and fundraising for focused grantmaking in four key areas that enable self-sufficiency. Women 4 Women is the only organization in the community solely focused on the needs of women and girls because we know that improving the lives of women and girls raises entire communities.

Thanks to all the generous donors who supported Prodigal Ministries during Give Local Louisville on October 1. Prodigal raised $10,955 during the 24-hour online-only event, hosted by the Community Foundation of Louisville.

In addition, Prodigal will receive $1,000 from the Swope Foundation, which is donating $1,000 to each of the 362 participating charities. Prodigal also will receive funds from the proportionate match pool. Those matching funds will be determined by November 15th.

“It was our ‘rookie’ season as part of this effort, and the donations to Prodigal surpassed our goals,” said Jennifer Partin, executive director. “We are blessed to have a great base of support in the Louisville community and are looking forward to participating again next year.”
