Who We Are
Prodigal Ministries is a Christian aftercare program offering a therapeutic living environment for men and women straight out of prison. We are a team of volunteers and staff working together to help those in need of support.
While Christ is the center of our program, we are open to working with anyone who has a true desire to change their life, regardless of his or her individual beliefs. Our mission is to help all of those transitioning from prison to society become self-sufficient and avoid re-incarceration, which is a tragically common experience.
With God’s help, we achieve lasting results, helping men and women establish new lives free from the burdens of their past. As our Lord Himself says, “Behold, I make all things new.”
Our History
Prodigal Ministries grew from the dream of an ex-offender. During eight years of incarceration, he observed a high number of former offenders returning to prison two, three, or even more more times. It was his dream to offer hope and help to former prisoners upon their release so that they could make a fresh start and live a meaningful life. In 1994, he and a small group of caring community leaders founded Prodigal Ministries, which has grown from a simple non-residential mentoring program into four full-time transitional homes in Jefferson and Oldham County.
What We Offer
Founded in 1994, we operate four transitional homes in both Jefferson and Oldham County. In downtown Louisville, we have two men’s houses: Prodigal House East and West, located side-by-side on Oak St. Our women’s home, the McCauley House, is located in Crestwood. There is also the men’s Wright House located just a few miles up the road in Buckner.Our homes are just that: homes. They are equipped and maintained to be comfortable and safe environments, so that our clients can focus fully on re-establishing their new lives without the stress and obstacles of unsafe housing or social groups. Each Prodigal home is a therapeutic living community, where clients can find peace and support, working with professionals, staff, and volunteers to decisively renew the trajectory of their lives.
Financial Management
Boards of directors have a fiduciary duty to ensure that the assets of a charitable nonprofit are used in accordance with donors’ intent, and in support of the charitable mission. One way to ensure prudent financial management is for the board of directors to adopt financial policies. Perhaps the most important financial policy for any charitable nonprofit is a conflicts of interest policy.
